Cave Rescue Service

Cave Rescue Service

In December 1987, the Cave Rescue Unit of the South Tyrolean Mountain and Cave Rescue Service was founded and became operational on 1 January 1988.

As early as the 1970s, South Tyrolean cave rescuers were working closely with the cave rescue service of the Società Alpinisti Tridentini (SAT).

The operational area of the Cave Rescue Unit covers the entire Province of Bolzano, and its operations primarily consist of accidents and search operations in caves and grottos, but also include operations in mines, tunnels, wells and pits.

In South Tyrol, most caves are located in the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park; further caves can be found in the Val Gardena and along the mountain range stretching northwards from the Roen to the Passo Palade.

The cave rescue service works in collaboration with the cave rescue teams of Trentino and Veneto; joint operations, courses and exercises are carried out.

In emergencies, South Tyrolean cave rescuers are also called upon for operations in other regions.
For several years now, there has also been cooperation with the Bolzano Mountain Rescue Service during their on-call shifts.

The team currently consists of 14 cave rescue technicians, who mainly come from the CAI sections in Bolzano and Branzoll.
