Bolzano Mountain Rescue

The Bolzano Mountain Rescue Service has been active in its operational area for over 70 years and places expertise, passion and a commitment to service at the heart of every operation. The team currently consists of around 30 volunteer members, including air rescue personnel, numerous qualified mountain rescuers, doctors and nursing staff, as well as a group of trainees who are currently undergoing training.

Several members of the team also belong to the canyoning group, a specialism that is becoming increasingly important given the growing popularity of canyoning in our region too. This is an activity with complex technical requirements that demands specific and continuously updated training.

Great attention is also paid to technological innovation: the team regularly works with drones, which have now become an indispensable tool in search and reconnaissance operations. The group has several certified drone pilots, some of whom are also nationally certified and are capable of operating in complex scenarios and providing effective support for rescue operations.

The area covered by the Bolzano Mountain Rescue Service includes the city of Bolzano, the Tschögglberg plateau, Kohlern and the Sarntal valley, in collaboration with the neighbouring teams from Eppan, Unterland, Merano and Renon.

The team’s areas of operation are diverse: from the rescue of injured hikers along the dense network of trails, through road traffic accidents, the search for missing persons and avalanche operations, to accidents in gorges.

To ensure speed and operational readiness, the team has modern and well-equipped emergency vehicles: a Land Rover Defender off-road vehicle, a latest-generation Mercedes Vito, which has been part of the fleet since 2024, and a Volkswagen T5 van, all equipped with the necessary technical equipment for immediate deployment. The fleet is supplemented by two Beta Alp 200 motorbikes, which are particularly suitable for rapid reconnaissance, especially during search operations.

The team is on standby around the clock, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, and responds to an average of around 50 call-outs per year, particularly during the summer season.

A cornerstone of their work is continuous training: the volunteers regularly attend courses and carry out ongoing exercises and further training, which are essential for the constant development of technical, mountaineering and medical skills.

The Bolzano Mountain Rescue Service is always looking for new people who are willing to get involved. If you love the mountains, can navigate alpine terrain responsibly and believe in the value of teamwork, this could be the place for you.

Becoming part of the team means completing a rigorous and qualified training programme, acquiring high-level technical and medical skills and making a tangible contribution to the safety of people who live in or visit the mountains.

If you feel you want to make a difference, take the first step: contact us and find out how you can join the Bolzano Mountain Rescue Team. The next call-out could be yours.
